Going Green: Five Cars Which Might Help You Save Money

As threats of global warming and the end of the oil supply continue to circulate, the world continues to attempt to go green. Recycling, riding your bike to work, having a reusable water bottle, or reducing your energy use are all ways to help in that effort. However, many of us do not have the option of riding our bikes or walking to wherever we need to go. Even public transportation like the Jacksonville bus system can be inconvenient. Buying a car seems like the only solution. However, buying a vehicle which only gets 20 or less miles per gallon could make your gas bills go through the roof. Consider one of these five gas-efficient cars for your next purchase.

  1. ZENN (Zero Emissions No Noise) – This completely electrically powered car is one of several new NEVs (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle). These cars, designed to travel anywhere from 30 to 60 miles before needing to be recharged, allow you to travel short distances without paying for any gas. Once you return home, hook them up to an outlet, and they will be fully charged in approximately twelve hours. Pricing begins around $14,700.
  2. Toyota Prius – This hybrid vehicle has lead the industry for the past several years. Despite braking difficulties, the Prius offers an excellent option for energy-efficiency. With a top estimated fuel efficiency of 51 mpg, features on the car include a solar powered ventilation system and integrated navigation. It is touted by Toyota as the best-loved and most efficient hybrid in America. It could be yours for a starting price of $22,800.
  3. smart fortwo – Engineered by Mercedes- Benz, the smart car comes in several different models, including convertibles. With prices beginning around $12,000, the smart car delivers 33 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway with new all electric models coming soon. A 90 mph top speed allows you to cruise the highways. Although it is only a two seater, it also has a cargo storage area in back. Other models include four door sedans. Despite its small size, the smart car received a top rating for front and side crash protection from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  4. Ford Transit Connect – Designed as a commercial delivery van, the Transit Connect is also being remodeled to work as a taxi cab. Running on either propane or natural gas, this vehicle will be available in late 2010 with further models to follow. The car has a maximum speed of 75 mph, designed to allow it to go for longer distances. A six to eight hour charging time makes this vehicle an eco-conscious and financially smart decision for any business owner. Pricing starts around $21,000.
  5. Tesla Roadster – For someone unconcerned with cost and interested in speed, the open-top Roadster could be the perfect fully electric car for you. With a top speed of 125 and acceleration from zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds, you can expect to travel up to 236 miles on one charge. Easily plugged in at night, the Roadster requires only about three and a half hours to recharge. Just be prepared to pay a lot for the privilege of driving this car. With a case purchase price of $101,500, the Roadster costs $1,658 per month to lease.
